Q & A
What made you want
to be a dentist?
"I used to have extremely unattractive, crowded teeth. My parents scheduled me with a great orthodontist in my home town, of Traverse City, Michigan, who literally ‘changed my life’. I went from a self-conscious teenage girl, to one NOT embarrassed to smile. The transformation had such a profound effect on me and my confidence. I wanted to perform procedures like this to help people feel better about themselves."
Did you think of becoming an orthodontist?
"Once I got a taste of the other areas of dentistry, I wanted the opportunity to perform other dental treatments such as fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, and periodontal care.  I prefer to not be limited to one specialty."
How would you describe your practice style?
"I strive to create a practice atmosphere reminiscent of a small-town dentist. I structure my day to treat one dental patient at a time. I welcome patients to call me by my first name. I want to be viewed as a friend. I enjoy knowing my patients, including what special touches they may need to feel relaxed and comfortable."
You are married
to a dentist?
"Yes, I met my husband, Dr. Douglas Henke, in dental school at the University of Michigan. Doug completed a Masters’ Program in Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa. Doug can be found working at my office two days a month performing tooth extractions and placing dental implants for the patients who need it. Doug is a great resource for me, as he has extensive knowledge of complex dental treatment cases. He practices the rest of the time in Farmington Hills, Michigan."
What do you like to do outside of work?
"Doug and I have three sons (Gannon, Will, and Ian). The boys keep our family very busy in the off-hours, as all three boys are hockey and lacrosse players. I have rediscovered reading and would like to fancy myself a bit of a closet interior decorator. I love going up north with my family for vacations to my hometown of Traverse City, MI."
